My Girl

This past weekend my daughter came home for a last minute, impromptu day. I hadn’t seen her in several weeks. Usually, I would have made plans to visit her in the city but time got away from both of us. Busy with work, friends, obligations and such kept us from making solid arrangements. I could tell by her voice a few days earlier, she was missing home and her mama.

She phoned early in the morning to announce she was coming as I scrambled to get some important work completed. It seemed like only a few minutes passed and she was walking in the front door. It was nice to have her back at home relaxing on the couch; telling me about her week.

Since it was a beautiful day, we decided to have a late breakfast somewhere outside and hopefully next to water. We had a wonderful meal and even better conversation about nothing in particular……just connecting with one another. We sparred back and forth in a teasing way mothers and daughters do, as she told me when I pull up to stop lights and signs, it drives her crazy….haha. Apparently, she feels I brake too close and should coast further in…umm…noted. It was just one of those moments you forgot happened in the past, but were quickly reminded of those precious everyday normal relationships.

After our meal we decided to head down to the walking path next to the lake. We lazily walked to the water’s edge and sat along the concrete wall, talking and people watching. Talking again about random life topics. At one point she laid down upon the concrete wall, hands behind her head and continued the conversation. I love her views on life; she teaches me so much. My hope is she thinks I’ve taught her as well.

Before heading home, we stopped by so she could say hi and visit her Nah Nah and picked some sweet corn from the garden. Once we arrived back home, she was happy to just hang out and do absolutely nothing…….well, except help me out with a little project. Then, she fell asleep on the couch as if she still lived at home and nothing had changed.

The visit from my daughter was a good reminder of connection and how warm and wonderful it felt to a mother’s heart. Even though we talk several times a week, the human and physical touch was a blessing. Just hanging with my girl was exactly what this mama needed on a sunny summer day and I’m pretty confident it’s just what she needed too. Connect with loved ones you haven’t seen in a while……it’s good for the soul.

xoxoxo…..Sheryl
