Lift as You Climb

Over a year ago, my good friend Marilyn began encouraging me to attend events with a women’s group she was passionate about. Time after time, life seemed to get in the way: scheduling conflicts, prior commitments, you name it. But Marilyn didn’t give up. She kept extending the invitation, confident it would be the perfect fit for me.

Finally, one evening, the stars aligned, and I was able to attend a fundraising event that included a night of painting. Months later, I joined their monthly breakfast, where I found myself sitting at a table full of warm, welcoming women. Little did I know, this group would open a door to something extraordinary.

During those initial events, I learned more about this inspiring group: P.E.O. a Philanthropic Educational Organization and sisterhood with a mission to celebrate, support, and motivate women, all while helping them advance through education.

According to their website:
“P.E.O. was founded in 1869 by seven students at Iowa Wesleyan College, who bonded over their shared enthusiasm for creating educational opportunities for women. Today, more than half a million women in the U.S. and Canada are members, united in their passion for empowering women.”

When I read their mission, “Where women motivate, educate, and celebrate women,” I knew I had found a community that aligned with my values and heart. This wasn’t just a group; it was a movement built on lifting each other up, standing shoulder to shoulder, and creating opportunities for women to thrive.

After connecting with Marilyn and Robyn, the group president, I was thrilled to be invited to officially join. The induction ceremony was steeped in tradition and heartfelt connection, and I could feel the care and intention behind every word and gesture.

I was welcomed with open arms into a circle of strong, compassionate women who immediately made me feel at home. Though I’ve only been a member for a month, they’ve already gathered me into their fold with love and kindness.

From the monthly breakfast meeting to caroling visits with members who can no longer attend events due to health issues, I’ve felt the true power of sisterhood. They’ve even pulled me into their weekly Mahjong group (not associated with P.E.O.), yet another opportunity to build friendships and share laughter.

In a world that can feel isolating at times, being part of a group like P.E.O. reminds me of the incredible strength and joy found in community. These women have taught me that supporting each other isn’t just about offering help; it’s about celebrating one another, sharing our gifts, and lifting each other up.

Joining P.E.O. has reminded me of the incredible strength that comes from women standing together. When we support one another, we don’t just grow individually, we create ripples of change that impact communities and lives far beyond our own. These women have shown me what it means to be part of something bigger than myself. I’m excited to roll up my sleeves and contribute to the work they’re doing in the name of education and empowerment.

How are you supporting the women in your life? Whether it’s joining a local group, celebrating a friend’s success, or simply lending an ear when someone needs it, there are countless ways to uplift one another. Take the leap, join that group, attend that meeting, or simply reach out to a friend. Together, we can create a world where women motivate, educate, and celebrate one another.  Lift as you climb is how women connect and spread kindness, love and empowerment. Let’s inspire each other to keep building communities where women thrive.
