Glory in the Highest

The holiday season has a magical way of bringing people together, filling our hearts with warmth and joy. This year, I had the privilege of starting the season in the most beautiful way, attending the Carthage Christmas Festival with friends new and old. It was an evening that perfectly blended tradition, music, and community, leaving us all inspired and deeply connected to the holiday spirit.

Held on the scenic campus of Carthage College, the Christmas Festival has been a cherished tradition for nearly 50 years. What began in 1874 as a simple holiday band concert has blossomed into a grand festival that draws thousands of attendees throughout the weekend. This year’s theme, “Glory in the Highest!” was a fitting celebration of the season’s message of peace, hope, and joy.

The festival featured an incredible lineup of performances by the Carthage Choir, Carthage Wind Orchestra, Carthage Philharmonic, Carthage Treble Choir, Carthage Chorale, and Lincoln Chamber Singers. From the moment we entered the chapel, the air was electric with anticipation and holiday spirit.

Our seats were in the front row of the east balcony, offering us a unique backstage view of the bells and the incredible pipe organ. It was mesmerizing to watch the musicians and singers prepare, their enthusiasm and passion palpable even from our elevated perch.

The festival was a stunning blend of traditional and contemporary holiday music. Choirs and orchestras alternated breathtaking performances, each more captivating than the last. The audience was invited to join in traditional Christmas hymns, creating a communal atmosphere that felt both intimate and grand.

The conductors brought an infectious energy to the stage, their enthusiasm lighting up the room. Watching them lead their ensembles was like witnessing a painter bring a masterpiece to life.

But the crowning moment of the evening came during the Service of Light. As the notes of “Silent Night, Holy Night” rang out, the entire chapel was illuminated by candlelight. Choir members, musicians, and audience members alike held their glowing candles high, their faces reflecting the warmth and reverence of the moment. It was a sight to behold, a perfect representation of the peace and hope we all yearn for during the holiday season.

This concert wasn’t just a performance; it was a heartfelt experience that reminded me of the beauty of togetherness. Amid the busy hustle of the holiday season, events like this are a gentle nudge to slow down and appreciate the moments that truly matter.

I left the chapel that evening feeling lighter, my spirit uplifted by the shared joy of music, tradition, and community. This concert is more than a local event, it’s a beautiful example of how the arts can inspire and unite us during the holidays.

How are you celebrating the holiday season this year? Whether it’s attending a local concert that includes Glory in the Highest, lighting a candle, or singing carols with your family, take a moment to embrace the magic and meaning of the season. Share your favorite holiday traditions or musical memories in the comments below, I’d love to hear how you’re making this season special! May this holiday season bring you peace, hope, and joy.
