Small Town, Big Heart

Ah, the holidays, a season of bright lights, cheery sounds, and a sense of togetherness that warms even the coldest nights. Recently, I had the pleasure of attending our local park district’s annual holiday tree lighting event with my daughter and two-year-old granddaughter. It was a magical evening filled with community, connection, and joy.

Having served as an elected official for my local park district for the past 12 years, I’ve been privileged to witness firsthand the positive impact our park district has on the community. From upgrading parks, playgrounds, and trails to becoming a shelter during extreme weather, hosting free events, and offering programs for children and adults just to name a few. The park district plays a vital role in enriching our lives. This year’s holiday event was a beautiful reminder of why I’m so proud to be part of this mission.

One of the highlights, prior to the tree lighting, was decorating the Positivi-Tree, a creative touch that encouraged attendees to hang ornaments adorned with messages of hope and encouragement. Some people brought ornaments from home, while others decorated the ones provided by the park district. It was a heartwarming addition to provide a place for children and adults the opportunity to add their personal messages to the beautiful tree.

The outdoor portion of the evening began with the sweet sounds of carols sung by 126 choir students from the local school districts, 6 and 126. Their harmonious voices set the tone for the night, filling the air with festive cheer.

After the choir’s carols, it was time for the main event, the tree lighting and the much-anticipated laser light show. As the trees lit up in a dazzling array of twinkling lights and colors, the crowd erupted in awe. But the real magic began when the 360-degree laser show filled the sky, accompanied by festive holiday music.

My granddaughter was enchanted. She danced and twirled beneath the vibrant lights, her little face lit up with wonder and curiosity. Watching her pure joy was a gift in itself, reminding me of the beauty of seeing the world through a child’s eyes.

The park district went above and beyond, offering not only entertainment but also warmth—literally! A food truck served hot cocoa, hot cider, and sweet treats, all as a gift to the community. As we walked back to our car, I reflected on how the park district fosters connection and joy through events like these. It’s not just about the upgrades and services, it’s about bringing people together and creating moments that matter. We ended the evening with chilly fingers, warm cocoa, and a funnel cake we enjoyed on the way home after being under the sparkling night sky.

This holiday season, let’s take a moment to appreciate the spaces and people who bring us together. Whether it’s through a local event from a small town with a big heart, a shared laugh, or a simple cup of hot cocoa, these moments remind us of what truly matters, connection, love, and joy.
