Falling into Gratitude
Fall has a way of wrapping us in its magic, the crisp air, vibrant colors, and cozy nights that make us slow down and savor the season. This year, my family came together for an intimate evening of fall fun, gratitude, and connection. It wasn’t just about the hayrides and bonfire; it was about appreciating the time we have with each other and giving thanks for the love that binds us together.
For years, my son and daughter-in-law have hosted a grand fall fest and hayride for friends and family. But with a new baby in their family, they decided to take a well-deserved break from hosting this year. Instead, we took the opportunity to create a smaller gathering at my brother Greg and sister-in-law Pat’s home for a family dinner, hayride, and bonfire that would remind us all of the simple joys of being together.
The centerpiece of our evening was my dad’s souped-up hay wagon, affectionately known as Chuck’s Party Wagon being pulled by his favorite John Deere 2510. With straw bales, blankets, glowing rope lights, a sound system, and a cooler stocked with refreshments, it was the epitome of comfort and fun. My brother Jeff, our trusty tractor driver, took us on a magical ride through the dark field adjacent to the farm.
As we bounced along the plowed farm field, the night air kissed our cheeks, and laughter filled the wagon. We sang, shared stories, and even broke into a little dancing under the stars. In those moments, I felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude; not just for the hayride but for the people who made it so special.
It’s easy to get caught up in the rush of life, but nights like this remind us to pause, appreciate, and give thanks for the people and moments that make our lives rich.
After our hay ride and dinner, we gathered around a roaring bonfire that lit up the night sky. The flames crackled and leapt, creating a warmth that drew us closer, not just physically, but emotionally too. Toasting marshmallows became a hilarious challenge as the intense heat kept us at arm’s length. My brothers and daughter found a creative solution, using spare pallets as shields to toast their marshmallows to perfection and some not-so much.
The kids and some adults dashed around playing tag, their laughter blending with the fire’s song. The rest of us shared memories, soaked in the beauty of the night, and expressed gratitude for the simple yet profound gift of togetherness. In that moment, I couldn’t help but think about how blessed I am to have a family that values connection and joy.
Fall is often seen as a time of transition, but it’s also a season for gratitude. The leaves may fall, but they pave the way for new growth. In the same way, our family gathering was a reminder to cherish the here and now, while also being thankful for the memories and traditions we continue to build.
This evening wasn’t just fun, it was a gift. A chance to slow down, reflect, and celebrate the abundance of love, laughter, and togetherness in our lives. As we packed up for the night, I felt an overwhelming sense of appreciation for my family and the traditions that bring us together.
We all agreed to make this an annual event. After all, it’s these moments of connection, sitting together around a bonfire, laughing under the stars, and riding through the fields that become the memories we’ll treasure forever. Try falling into gratitude this holiday season and keep or build new traditions of your own. Happy Thanksgiving!
