Winter Reboot

Several months ago, my friend reached out to me and asked if I would be interested in signing up for a “socially distanced” winter retreat her friend was hosting. With restrictions set during Covid, I thought by February I’d be ready to spend a weekend treating my body to some extra special pampering and I said yes. I was looking forward to a relaxing weekend and spa-filled experiences.

Five days prior to the event we were sent a schedule which kind of surprised me. The only items on the agenda besides a journaling class were daily yoga and exercise sessions. Ummm…..OK, this weekend looks a little different that I had originally expected. The classes didn’t give any details and I was hopeful that the yoga classes would be restorative …. at least a girl could dream.

I was wrong! Flat-out, there ain’t nothing restorative about these yoga classes, wrong. They were filled with planks, downward dogs, high leg flow series, and twisty-pretzel-like moves while sitting on blocks. After class, my friend and I were excited about getting into the spa hot tub for a relaxing soak. Not so fast, the spa was at it’s capacity and we couldn’t get in….argh!

When it was time for the “exercise” session, we walked in and I had a sneaky suspicion we were in for a challenging 90 minutes. I noticed heavy ropes, TRX stations, weights, balance balls, lots of bands and cones. I was right! We sweated our asses off for the next hour and a half. At one point I might have been taking a breath when Chris, one of the instructors came over, gave me a pat on the buttocks, asked me if I was taking a break, said he saw me and the rest was over.

At another point in the class, I looked over at my friend, and low and behold, Joe, the other trainer was giving her a massage. WHAT? He was telling me to hold the plank while she was getting her quads stretched. Ummm……I’ll take what she’s having, please! Next thing I know, both Joe and Chris were stretching her out and massaging her back! Again…..I’ll take that over these damn planks!

The remaining classes challenged us to push hard, dig deep and finish strong, even though my friend kept giving Joe and Chris the stink-eye….LOL. We were shaky, sweaty and exhausted in the best possible way.

Even though it was a weekend of pushing ourselves sessions, I was glad I went and committed to the schedule. I met two great trainers, a fantastic yoga instructor and some incredible women. I laughed more than I had in months, and concluded, the winter reboot was just what I needed. Although I had a hard time getting in and out of the car. My quads, biceps, stomach, gluts, pecs and shoulders felt every move.

xoxox…..Sheryl

PS…..We never did get into the spa! It was at capacity the entire time, and poor planning on our part.
