The Last Supper
As we send March on its way and welcome in April, it’s filled with anticipation of new life, green grass, budding trees, flowers, and warmer weather. It’s also a sign Easter is on its way. This Easter will look different than any other year, and I’m trying to embrace the feeling.
My Mom has basically lived in two houses her entire life (across the street from each other). Her father built the house my brothers, sister and I were raised in, and in 2009 my parents built a house on the opposite of the street.
After my Dad’s passing in 2017, my Mom felt the house was much too big for her and recently decided it was time to sell and move to Virginia to live with my sister. This took my brothers and I by surprise since this was the only place she’d ever called home. Once her decision was made, we needed to honor her choice. For the last six weeks or so, we’ve been busy packing up her belongings.
In one of my brother Jeff’s and my conversations, we realized we hadn’t planned Easter dinner yet. Once we started planning, we came to the point of determining who would host. At the same time, we both said, “Mom’s house.” We’d eat at Mom’s for one last holiday dinner. We’d celebrate together as a family in the house our parent’s called home.
Since we’re still packing and items are being sold, we’re not even sure we’ll have a place to eat, but we’re going to improvise and make do. Most of her dishes, glassware, and silverware are already packed. The kitchen table and chairs are sold, and her dining room set is currently for sale. We still have the counter, a couple of couches, and plenty of floor space…..ha!
I’ve got many mixed emotions of the house being sold, losing old and gaining new traditions. We won’t be able to pop over to Mom’s house anymore. What an odd yet sad feeling. She sounds happy when we speak on the phone which makes me realize she’s ready for a new chapter in her life. Which will be the beginning of a new chapter for us as well. The last supper on this Easter Sunday will be in honor of our parents, and a life well-lived in the beautiful home they built together. Join us in a toast to celebrate old and new traditions, and Easter blessings. May yours be filled with happiness and a chocolate bunny or two.
