Telling a New Story
If you’ve followed my posts in the past, you may know that I consider myself a life-long learner. I love to write but I also love to learn, and this week I’m part of a five day workshop titled, Write Your New Story 2021. What is the story you tell yourself and others about 2020? How did that story affect your days, weeks and even months?
Most, if not all stories can be seen from different angles. Because of the events of the year, a person could focus all their energy and attention on the challenges we faced as a nation and world. A year full of anger, sorrow, fear, anxiety, injustice, unrest and hate.
When I look back at my story of 2020, I can see it from different perspectives. My year was going along smoothly, until Covid19 came barreling in. All the joy and adventure slowly disappeared from my calendar. It started with a few events, several get togethers, two weddings, four airplane trips, one weekend getaway, lots of anticipated adventures, and many other calendar dates that had all been cancelled, which included holidays. Although, I understood the reasoning behind the cancellations, it wasn’t always easy to swallow. I was alone, lonely and craved human touch.
Or, I can look at 2020 from a completely different lens and telling a new story. Putting aside the loss and difficulty, it was filled with abundant opportunities for growth, creativity, learning new things, thinking outside the box, discovering new ways of working and communicating together, finding more time to reflect and create new habits, routines, and of course beauty. I was alone, albeit felt blessed, thankful and open to possibilities.
We may not have control over external forces but we do have control of our own individual internal stories. The mind is very powerful. It will focus on what you focus on. I want to focus on hope and joy over sadness and despair. You have a chance to tell your story through whatever lens you choose. By becoming aware of how you tell it can begin to cause a shift in your energy, outlook and reality.
I’m choosing my life story of 2020 to reflect my second perspective; one of purpose and growth. Moving forward and not looking back. Fighting the dark forces that try to pull me down. I’m standing up for the kindness, and light people are sharing, that’s part of a bigger love story. A love story that weaves into every corner of the world. You are a beautiful soul with a beautiful story. What’s your 2020 story and how will you be telling a new story for 2021? Stay curious …. It’s the opposite of judgment. Saying “that’s interesting” puts a whole new outlook on the words within your chapters.
