Neon Nights

Sometimes in life, we have to navigate blindly through situations, relying on our instincts and senses to guide us. This past weekend, I had both the pleasure and absolute joy of experiencing a glow in the dark night golf outing, which beautifully mirrored these moments of uncertainty. The experience was filled with laughter, excitement, and valuable lessons that reminded me of the importance of trusting oneself even in the darkest of times.

We were encouraged to decorate our golf carts, bring flashlights, and pack plenty of bug spray. The tee-off areas and hazards were marked with flashing lights, glow sticks, and a few rope-lit paths to guide us through sharp curves. My friend Marilyn and I eagerly adorned our carts with flashing multi-colored lights, fairy lights, a spinning light-up whirling wand, and armed ourselves with bubble guns. The atmosphere was electric and everyone’s excitement filled the air.

For the next two hours, we navigated the course, path, terrain, and other golfers, searching for our next hole, ball, fairway, and green. We each used light-up balls in various neon colors. The sun set shortly after we finished two holes, and for the remaining seven holes, it was pitch dark. Precisely, can’t-see-in-front-of-your-face pitch dark.

The darkness added an element of mystery and challenge to the game. Since you couldn’t see other golfers unless their lit-up cart was nearby, neon-colored spheres would suddenly shoot into the night sky, creating a surreal and magical visual spectacle. At one point, a ball flew directly in front of us, indicating another team had crossed paths into our fairway. It was hilarious albeit a little dangerous. I do believe someone yelled, “FORE!”

With the night being so dark, we had to trust and navigate the course relying on our flashlights and senses. At one point, our cart suddenly became perpendicular to the ground, and I thought for sure we’d tip right over. Apparently, we had veered off the path but managed to self-correct just in time.

This experience mirrored life’s unpredictable nature. Sometimes, we find ourselves navigating through darkness, unable to see the path ahead clearly. It’s in these moments that we must trust our instincts, lean on our senses, and rely on the support of those around us.

The Lessons Learned

Trust and Adaptation: Just like navigating the pitch-dark golf course, life often requires us to trust our instincts and adapt to the unknown. When our cart suddenly became perpendicular to the ground, we thought we’d tip over. Apparently, we had veered off the path but managed to self-correct. It was a reminder that sometimes, despite our best plans, we need to trust our ability to adjust and find our way back.

Rely on Your Senses: With limited visibility, we relied heavily on our other senses and the tools we had flashlights, glowing markers, and our intuition. In life, when one path seems obscured, it’s crucial to use all available resources and trust our internal compass.

Enjoy the Journey: Despite the challenges, the night was filled with laughter and joy. The glow of neon balls, the surprise encounters, and the decorated carts all added to the fun. Even when navigating blindly, it’s essential to find moments of happiness and humor.

Safety and Awareness: We had to stay aware of our surroundings to avoid potential hazards, much like being vigilant in life to steer clear of pitfalls. The experience reinforced the importance of being cautious while still enjoying the journey.

Neon nights and our glow-in-the-dark golfing adventure was more than just a fun activity; it was a metaphor for life’s unpredictable nature. Sometimes we must navigate blindly, trusting our instincts and adapting to the unknown. It’s about enjoying the journey, staying aware, and finding joy in unexpected places. And, arming yourself with a bubble gun or two is always a good idea.
