Little Things Add Up
It’s hard to believe that more than half of the year is already in the rear view mirror. Have you taken time in the first half to create new practices, live new dreams, try new things, or even get rid of old patterns that don’t serve your best life? There’s still time this year to make things happen. Instead of looking at the remainder in a one six-month chunk, look at it one day at a time. Ask yourself, “What’s one action I can take today?” It can be one tiny step or a giant leap toward the outcome or feeling you want to achieve.
Earlier this year I added another class to my weekly yoga practice. It was only committing to an additional 60 minutes a week, but I realized how much better is was for my health and wellbeing. For the month of June I committed to doing something good for myself daily. I figured I could do anything for 30 days. What I found out was when I meditated every day, even for 10 minutes, my day improved. When July hit I suddenly stopped and within a few days wondered why, and began again since it made me feel much better. I didn’t beat myself up for stopping, and simply started again. In the future when I miss a day or two, it won’t be a big deal, and I’ll start once more. I believe when we feel like we’ve failed at something we’re especially hard on ourselves and either give up or stop trying.
For the remainder of July, I’m committing to replacing one meal a day with a green smoothie four days a week. If I don’t hit all four days, I’ll allow myself some grace without judgement (five steps forward and two steps back still equals positive movement ahead). You never know, I may love it so much I’ll continue into August and beyond.
Try setting daily intentions of making small changes in your life. Some days you may not feel like doing anything or maybe you need to rest. That’s ok, it may be that’s just what your body needs. Even if you’re moving the needle forward a few days a week, by the end of the year, that’s a lot of days you’re doing something good for you.
I’m challenging you to take one little brave step today and maybe one little brave step tomorrow. I promise you all the little things add up. Before you know it, you’ll look back at the end of the year and be amazed at your progress and victories. Remember, little changes pave the way for big ones. Everyone single one matters. Then be prepared to queue the balloons and confetti.
