Betcha A Nickel
As a child up until the passing of my dad; my brothers, sister and I often heard the phrase, “betcha a nickel” between him and my mom. I loved hearing those words since they always came along with a hint of laughter. The bet could have been over a car or snowmobile race, football or basketball game, the upcoming weather, or any other random topic that was worthy of a hunch. It was fun to watch their playful interaction.
Over the years the wager amount sometimes fluctuated anywhere between a nickel and a dollar, but mostly a nickel. The winner would be revealed and the loser always paid up. Sometimes friends and family were included in the fun, but most time it was just the two of them.
After my Dad’s passing, my sister and I represented the family and my Mom’s wishes regarding the gravestone they would one day share. The gentlemen helping us with monument decisions, asked if any special words or phrase should be added in addition to names, dates and etchings. After conferring with the family, it was an unanimous decision to add the phrase, “betcha a nickel.” It would be two words that would forever link their lives in a loving and playful manner.
This week the beautiful granite monument was finally put in place; just in time for my Dad’s birthday, also this week. It was perfect timing to honor his life. You may wonder how we decided on such a plain phrase that would be etched in stone forever and yet, represent so much. For my siblings and I, it was an easy decision based on the memories my Mom and Dad shared with us throughout their marriage. “Betcha a nickel” is a simple, yet powerful statement for lives well-lived.
What are those moments in your life that had a significant impact? I’m waging it’s the small, yet meaningful memories you remember most and if you don’t believe me……I’ll gladly betcha a nickel.
