What Have You Done For You Lately
There’s a little known secret in the land of motherhood or spouse-hood, or family-hood, etc., that women think it’s selfish to do for themselves before others. Where did that come from anyway? Even on a plane they instruct us to administer oxygen to ourselves before helping others. Thinking about that when I flew with my children at a young age, somehow felt self-serving since a mother’s nature is to take care of other’s first.
Over the last several years I’ve been learning and practicing to the contrary, and frankly have discovered this isn’t true or even good for us. It’s not selfish or self-serving, or narcissistic; rather the opposite. It’s about loving ourselves enough and knowing we are worth it. Of course, we want to take care of others which is fabulous, but doing and giving to ourselves is the greatest and best thing we can do not only for our souls, but for our family and friends as well.
Loving yourself can be as simple as taking a relaxing bubble bath, reading a book, exercising, or a simple five minute meditation. It doesn’t have to cost any money at all, just dedicated, precious time to connect with your mind, body and spirit. This year I’ve committed to seeking new things just for me; to help me connect to who I am at the core, and last weekend I went with two dear friends to a women’s weekend retreat.
It was set kinda in the middle of nowhere; surrounded by farm fields and wide open spaces; perfect for this country gal. The Bed and Breakfast was beautiful from top to bottom and the owners thought of everything to make houseguests feel welcomed and special. The weekend gave me new inspiration and set me on a path of continued growth and pushing myself outside my comfort zone, while listening to my inner wisdom and guidance.
In this season of love, find time to pamper and love yourself as you continue to give to others. Make a conscious choice to do something just for you; whether it’s a planned outing with friends or tucked at home in a favorite spot, doing something you love. Ask, what have you done for you lately, and what is the thing that sets your soul on fire, or one thing you can do for yourself that connects your mind, body and spirit? You are worth it, I am worth it…….we all are deserving of our own love.
Happy heart day to us!
