Ten Years In The Making

Several years ago, I was having dinner with a group of girlfriends and the host wanted us to write down dreams and goals on our bucket list and then she tucked them away for a later date. Fast forward ten years…..I was having dinner with three of those same girlfriends and one of them told me she had recently uncovered our lists and that I had been the one to mark off the most from my list. What, really? I loved hearing that but couldn’t remember a single item from my list….haha.

I asked if she would send me a picture of it later that evening. One of the items was to take my children on a trip; which had been on my mind and already planned. You may think that’s no big deal, but for me, it was. We spent time each year on vacation, but they always included other friends and family. We hadn’t taken a trip with just us, until this year. I had given them a trip of their choice for their Christmas present. It was fun to think and plan of what would suit us best. After many conversations and investigation, we settled on Costa Rica and would all experience it together for the first time.

With my son being recently married, the trip included, me, my daughter, son and daughter-in-law. The trip started coming together as we began planning our excursions. We were all up for deep sea fishing, which my daughter nor I had ever experienced. Once we got to the resort, we would make additional plans.

The resort was beautiful and as luck would have it, both our rooms were upgraded and we ended up next to each other in our own little alcove. It was the perfect set-up as our balconies faced the ocean with an amazing view of the blue water and lush green surroundings with mountains in the distance on either side.

We spent seven glorious days together enjoying the weather, water, beach, pool activities, adventures and food. As you might have guessed, not everything went as smoothly as we hoped. All four of us had an incident that only caused minor annoyances, but we were no worse for the wear….haha. I scraped my leg up good on a large rock while snorkeling, my daughter got food poisoning eating a local rice dish, my son hit his face on the bottom of the pool, which may or may not have involved cocktails and my daughter-in-law was stung several times by a bee that was inside of her beach towel. We were a mess…..LOL.

Our trip may have only lasted a week, but the memories will be in my heart forever. It was a joy and blessing to be with my children with no interruptions, schedules or obligations; I had them all to myself.  It may have been ten years in the making, but it was worth the wait. I loved hanging out with my kids and it appears they loved hanging out with me too. Are you ticking off things on your bucket list? I can’t wait to check another one off of mine.
