Something Bigger
“When things don’t work out the way you planned, maybe life has bigger things planned for you. You just don’t know them yet” - David Cuschieri. Since 2018 my daughter has talked about buying a home on and off, but wasn’t really serious until recently (even though she resigned her lease through June of next year). She’s loved living in the city of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, however, her recent job offer and acceptance has taken her out of state with quite a long commute.
The good news for me, her brother, his family, and her Dad, she’s looking to buy in southern Wisconsin which means she’ll be a lot closer to home. A few weeks ago she found what she thought was her perfect fixer-upper that checked off most of her boxes.
Even though she doesn’t have much construction knowledge, I have no doubt she’ll figure it out. She has a get-er-done kind of attitude. She doesn't stop until the project is done, which I’ve always admired about her. Plus her Dad and brother are be able to help with remodeling. I’ll also help with whatever else is needed that doesn’t involve big power tools, plumbing, or electricity….lol.
The hunting process happened very quickly. We looked at the charming house on a Sunday evening and she had to have the offer in at noon on the following Tuesday (the deadline for all offers). Within the next few days she crunched the numbers over and over, taking into consideration several scenarios with mortgage rates, and length of time to determined how much she would be willing to pay (while making sure she had plenty of wiggle room to live within her means). She wanted to make sure she put her best bid forward to have the greatest chance of it being accepted.
She was on pins and needles for the next 48 hours. Her agent reached out to her to let her know she was the highest bid, however, there was a cash offer on the table. The house was a foreclosure and owned by the bank, and she wasn’t able to meet the owners. It was a waiting game to find out if they would accept her non-cash offer. Unfortunately, they accepted the cash bid.
Although I know she was disappointed, I told her how proud I was of the way she handled herself in determining the offer. It was her first home and first offer. She learned so many lessons and valuable information that’ll make her more knowledgeable next time. I know something bigger and better is waiting for her. It may not appear today or tomorrow, but the perfect home is on its way to her. Things don’t always work out as planned, but I believe it’s the universe’s way of having our back.

PS … To help with her commute, she currently stays with me once a week. I love having her home.
