Rolling The Dice
Every Christmas my family has some sort of gift exchange, and each year we try to come up with something different and fun. This year was no exception. My brother, Jeff and his family decided the fate of the gifts would be left up to chance by rolling dice; two giant, bright yellow and red foam dice.
The game started off with a card draw to select the gift picking order of the unopened gifts. Once everyone had a mystery present in their possession, the dice rolling began. Pass to the person on your left, switch with the person on right, open your gift or roll again. On and on for three full rounds. A lot of laughter and crazy dice throwing was going down. It was a good thing they were made out of soft foam….HA. After three rounds the game was over and everyone had a gift. There may have been some bargaining going on after the final roll; especially my fourteen year old nephew, who received cooking oils, and spices.
It was a great way to have a little fun for the holiday, but it also got me thinking about life and rolling the dice; taking a chance on something worthwhile. How many people miss the chance at something wonderful because of fear or uncertainty? Including me, I’ve let opportunities slip right through my fingers out of apprehension, lack of confidence, unwilling to risk my heart or even just laziness.
When I refer to rolling the dice, I don’t mean being careless about chances, but rather risking your heart to fall in love, showing your venerabilities, trusting your gut or leaping with faith to something you’ve been hoping and preparing for. Believing in yourself without doubt or second guessing. Being fearless to capture your dream.
Are you taking a chance on you and sharing your gifts? Ask yourself what sets your soul on fire? What do you love to do that comes easily for you? Be your own cheerleader and bellow out your own victory cry. Rolling the dice may be worth the very chance on you.
