Queen for a Day

Each year, I look forward to the second Sunday in May to celebrate Mother’s Day. Not only to honor my beautiful Mom, but to spend time with my children. Usually, there aren’t any issues with scheduling, but this year was an exception. My daughter needed to head back to college shortly after my son arrived home from out of town. We were only able to spend about an hour together that was consumed in pandemonium; not quite the picture I had in my head of the perfect “Mother’s Day”….HA.

My daughter was leaving the next morning at 3:30 AM for a school internship program, and had less than twelve hours to drive back to school, finish an assignment, pack her suitcase, work for three hours until 10:00 PM, and sleep. She was a bit frantic waiting for her brother to arrive so she could borrow his GoPro camera to capture her memories, which to her dismay, was still in his possession. Upon arrival, my son had to download the pictures to his computer, which could take more than an hour……yeah, his sister had no time to wait, and agreed to add that to her To-Do list prior to 3:30 AM. You can imagine her delight.

Her brother gave a quick rundown on how to use the camera in an abbreviated lesson, which I never would have retained. Next, it was a quick kiss on each cheek, a hug and away she went. Trumpeting another happy Mother’s Day sentiment as she jumped in her car and sped away.

The rest of the day was devoted to one on one time with my son. The thing I love most about spending Mother’s Day with my children, I get to be “Queen” for a day. It doesn’t matter what I want to do, they agree. For the last several years I have picked yard work…..yep, can you believe it, yard work? It’s not that I wouldn’t rather be pampered for the day, but getting the yard ready for the summer season is an otherwise dreaded chore, but doing it together makes it much sweeter. At the end of the day, we were both tired, but felt good about the hard work and all we accomplished. We talked about improvements for next year, and the vegetables we would plant in the upcoming weeks.

From the mayhem earlier that day, running around getting my daughter ready to go out the door, and my son coming in the door, was exactly how a typical day looks like in my life. As I suspect most people can relate, in one way or another. When I reflect about the day, it ended up being the unspoiled picture in my head of a wonderfully kooky, you never know what kind of imperfectly, perfect day you’re gonna get. I give thanks for the easy days, as well as the not so easy days……but, I am especially grateful in being “Queen” for a day.
