Just Breathe
I was reminded during yoga this week how important it is for us to breathe. The good news is our bodies are equipped to take in oxygen automatically without effort or thought. However, there are times I subconsciously hold my breath due to stress, pain, worry, or overwhelm, without even realizing it.
Over the last several years of practicing yoga, I’ve learned how to consciously breathe throughout the entire hour. It keeps me focused, calm and stress free … well except during the plank series … HA! Even though the instructor is constantly reminding the class to breathe, it’s becoming second nature for me. So why then don’t I apply these same breathing rules in my every day life?
When I’m no longer in the present moment and either having regrets of the past or worrying into tomorrow is when I’m confident my breathing patterns have gone to hell. They fly out the window as soon as I get into my head. Even though I am much better at consciously breathing than I used to be, I still have much to learn. I’m encouraged there are so many benefits to simple deep breathing exercises. Practice and consistency is all it takes.
Deep breathing benefits:
Reduces anxiety and depression
Strengthens stress management
Helps detoxify the body
Lowers blood pressure
Increases energy
Try one of these deep breathing exercises if you are in the same predicament and unconsciously holding your breath throughout the day.
4-7-8 Breathing: Breathe quietly in through the nose for 4 seconds, hold for 7 seconds, exhale forcefully through the mouth for 8 seconds (repeat up to 4 times)
Triangle Breathing: Inhale for 5 counts, hold for 5 counts and exhale for 5 counts (repeat up to 4 times)
If you’re letting stress, anxiety, pain and overwhelm take over your life, it’s time to take charge of your precious mind, body, and soul. The breath is our lifeline to everything. By consciously breathing, you are automatically putting yourself in the here and now. Being present is a gift to ourselves and our loved ones. By being able to just breathe is like striking gold for our mind, body and soul. Who’s with me?

PS….I encourage you to get outside and breathe in the fresh air and notice how much better you feel.
