Is the Grass Really Greener?

How often have you wished for something else? Thinking…..surely, something has to be better and the grass on the other side, MUST be greener.  I was in a meeting last week and someone asked, “Where are you from?” Without hesitation, I shrugged my shoulders and confessed “Only here.”  Someone from the group proudly responded, ” I am glad to say I live here.” I immediately felt shame by my response.  She was right, why did I think the place I call home is less wonderful than any other place?

There are so many amazing locations right in my own back yard, but I never thought of myself as being lucky to live near them.  I am close to one of the five Great Lakes of North America, and feel a sense of joy when I am near the lake front.  How did this escape my list of amenities and selling points of the area?  There are many other attributes of the surrounding towns and cities, when I start to count them off in my head.  Of course, there other places in the world that may be more beautiful or more exotic than my current location; but I know, without a doubt, I am exactly where I am supposed to be in this moment.  Each and everyone of us are exactly where we are supposed to be…..right now.

I practice gratitude every morning, yet have never thought to include the beautiful place I call home, when giving thanks.  After the shame I felt by my ho-hum answer, I now include it in my gratitude practice.

We may live in different places throughout our lives, but know we are exactly where we are supposed to be.  So, is the grass really greener?  After all, my sun and moon are the same as yours. I challenge you to care, nourish and water your own grass; make it a brilliant green, and thrive where you are planted.
