Double Bubble
With a recent trip to Iceland, I was able to experience some incredible adventures. It was both rugged and beautiful; definitely a nature lover’s paradise. Even though the land was filled with volcanoes, glaciers, waterfalls, rivers, and caves, one of the coolest things I experienced was sleeping in a bubble. Let me repeat that……sleeping in a BUBBLE……how cool is that?
It was part of a tour which consisted of three Presidential-style black SUVs, three Icelandic drivers/tour guides, eighteen passengers, five tours stops, nine bubbles and twenty-four hours. The SUV my group traveled in was navigated by Olaf; one totally fascinating Icelandic dude. He arranged the pick-up of my group and was down-to-earth and welcoming, as we toured the golden circle. As it turned out, Olaf was well connected in Iceland, a music producer, studio owner, song writer, singer, musician and most recently associated with the bubble tours.
Prior to arriving at the bubbles, we walked in the fields of parliment at Thingvellir, witnessed amazing geysers, stood aside the powerful, yet beautiful waterfall of Gullfoss and drank champagne at the secret lagoon. As the day was nearing sunset, we arrived at an unknown location and each two were led to their bubble.
The bubbles were tucked into the woods; each separated by trees, twigs, grasses and space. My friend and I rounded the corner on the path, could see our bubble and were excited beyond words. It was an igloo-style bubble that consisted of the main area and the entrance that contained a set of doors separated by six feet. Olaf instructed not to have both doors opened at the same time or the bubble would deflate…..noted!
The bubble was completely clear and surrounded by tall evergreens. The wind was enabling the trees to bend and sway. It was fascinating to see the trees move in unison with the wind but couldn’t feel and hear anything within the bubble. It was as if you were in nature, but not. As the sky darkened, millions of stars appeared as some went shooting by in a flash, across the milky way.
I barely slept a wink that night and set my alarm every hour in case I fell asleep; I didn’t want to miss a thing. Unfortunately, we didn’t see the northern lights during the bubble stay, but hands down one of the coolest nights I’ve ever experienced.
Once we were home, my friend spotted an add for dining in bubbles along the Chicago River. She immediately contacted the group and we all said yes. Within a few minutes we were booked for our second bubble experience. I decided it would be the start of our world bubble tour…..HAHA.
Dining along the Chicago River, in the snow was fun even though it wasn’t quite as cool as the Iceland bubble. We played Yahtzee and had fun conversation as we enjoyed the sites and sounds of the city, on a chilly and snowy night. Here’s to this year’s double bubble experiences, and hopefully the start of the World Bubble Tour; I’ll be on the look-out for sure! Wanna come along?
