Do.....Re....Mi
I had the opportunity recently to attend a sing along with seven girlfriends, and approximately eight hundred musical, or not so musical, strangers on a mild November evening. The theatre that housed the event was built in 1929, with a dark blue, dimly lit ceiling, that included twinkling lights and moving clouds to resemble a night sky. We belted out in unison, the snappy tunes from The Sound of Music; a 1965 classic movie, starring Julie Andrews.
While entering the theatre, every guest was given a bag of props to use during the movie, and I immediately felt the evening would be entertaining. While rummaging through the prop bag, we examined it’s contents, determining the use for each one. In the background, an elderly man played spirited music on what looked like to be a very old organ.
As the evening got underway, people dressed up like characters from the movie paraded across the stage, and everyone clapped and roared in support. The theatre host gave us suggestions on using the props, and the movie began.
Words to the songs appeared on the screen and for the next three hours the audience was connected as if we were old friends. No one was embarrassed if they couldn’t hold a tune, at one point my voice went up when a musical note when down, and we busted out laughing. It was fun to do something I normally wouldn’t think of doing.
Experiencing new things can expand our horizons, and our lives become richer. As the saying goes….dance like no one’s watching, but on this mild night in November, it was to……. sing like no one’s listening, as we belted out the lyrics……do…re…mi. It didn’t matter if we were in key or not, loud or soft, alto or soprano, it was a cheerful night celebrating friendship together with my girlfriends, and eight hundred friendly strangers. Let go of expectations, be playful….give into adventure, and belt out your own tune.
