Decisions, Decisions

“Nothing happens until you decide. Make a decision and watch your life move forward,” - Oprah Winfrey. I don’t know about you, but I often find myself in a quandary over an important decision. It may be the Gemini (twins sun sign) in me or some other factor like avoidance or even perfectionism. I can second guess myself for fear of getting it wrong, or after I make a decision I may wonder if it was the right one … argh.

What I know is by procrastinating and not making a decision is actually making a decision of no action, which leaves me stuck right where I am … UGH! I’m not listening to my inner wisdom, but rather letting my internal critic run the show. My judge pushes me to make decisions or not out of anger, fear, anxiety, scarcity, or the like. Although I can make some quick decisions on the spot, I often envy people that have no trouble ever deciding. My Mom and sister know right now and often don’t understand how their innate method doesn’t work for me.

Recently, my daughter and I dined at a new eatery in a neighboring town that was the first conveyor-belt sushi restaurant in the area. Although my daughter was very familiar with how they worked, I’d never seen or experienced that type of dining set-up. You were supposed to grab any small portion sushi plate as it continuously rambled by. I was so intrigued by the endless options and the speed in which they traveled, I couldn’t take my eyes off of the system; failing miserably at reading every selection going by while attempting a conversation with my daughter.

At one point, in the background, I faintly heard her say, “Mom, Mom, Mom … SHERYL!” She noticed how overwhelmed I was by all the possibilities. She thought it would be best for her to pull the plates for us to share until I got the hang of it. LOL  Once I settled in and got the lay of the land and conveyor, I was able to navigate my choices better.

I mention this story as a fun metaphor for coming to a resolution. It can often feel overwhelming at times. Although there are many suggestions for making a decision, a friend recently reminded me the simple way of using a pros and cons list. Applying this method along with my inner wisdom and intuition, is what I’m going to try the next time I’m being hijacked by indecision from something important.

“May your choices reflect your hopes not your fears,” - Nelson Mandela. The next time you hear yourself saying, “Decisions, decisions,” it’s time to listen to your inner guidance and take the negative emotions out of the situation. I’m going to do the same. I’d love to hear your decision making process.

xoxox…..Sheryl

PS … As a funny side note, when my daughter and I ordered items off the menu from our server, we didn’t realize there was a train track delivery system above the rotary conveyor that delivered our order which remained until our waiter noticed it was still aloft.
