Damn Near Perfect
Three years ago this week, my Dad went home to the Lord and some days feel like yesterday and other days feel like a million years ago since we laughed, talked or hugged. My Dad was larger than life, not just to me and my family but to so many that wanted to be in his circle of love.
Some of my favorite things about my Dad included his humor, friendly manner and fist pounding laugh he was known for. He was also known for always seeing the positive side of life and whenever anyone asked him how he was doing his response was always, “Damn near perfect.”
It was a response that made people smile or even laugh, but always made them feel at ease and welcomed in his presence. You felt his character and warmth even at the end of his life. He said those words over and over again when people came to visit in the hospital and then at home, just hours before his passing. It was a heartfelt way for my Dad to make those grieving feel a little less pain in his presence because it seemed, even for a brief moment, like it was just another day of hearing those famous three words of how he was doing, “Damn new perfect.”
Shortly after his passing, my brother had gotten word that one of my Dad’s best friend’s son, paid tribute to him by painting those three little words across the back of his refurbished 1950 cherry red GMC truck. Immediately a lump formed in my throat and tears fell upon my cheeks. It was a beautiful tribute to my Dad. Mike and my Dad had a special relationship and I know he loved him like a second father.
Late this past summer I was able to get a closeup look at Mike’s truck, which was prominently displayed at his parent’s wedding anniversary celebration my family attended. It was held at their farm, also known as my Dad’s second home. Even though my Dad was dearly missed at the celebration, we could feel him all around.
Even in the face of death, he stayed positive until the end. What a beautiful gift he gave us. Those three little words, “Damn near perfect,” will always hold a special place in my heart as well as Mike’s, my family’s and so many others that were touched by my Dad’s presence. I miss him every day.
