Connection
This past weekend I was fortunate enough to spend a long weekend in Door County, Wisconsin with my oldest and dearest friend. We’ve been best friends since high school, through thick and thin, good times and bad. I’m beyond thankful for her tender heart, thoughtful ways and generous spirit.
Prior to the trip, we made a few solid plans, but mostly just wanted to spend time together doing nothing in particular. Her husband and six month old puppy Ellie were part of the fun, even though I think they got the bum deal staying home a few times while we were out looking for adventure.
Every place we stumbled upon, people were friendly and nice. One rainy day we wanted to get coffee before heading to our spa appointment and my friend had told me about a new place named Discourse, with a tag line that read, a liquid workshop. As we entered a lower level storefront, it was a bit eclectic and dark inside with wood counters as well as some sections of the walls. Behind the counter stood a young man we would soon learn was Ryan. He was like a coffee mad-scientist of sorts.
My friend ordered first, but Ryan didn’t have all the ingredients for the one she wanted, but suggested another option that sounded perfect. As he got to work brewing her concoction, I asked what was the most popular coffee drink and he didn’t hesitate to immediately recommend the Moonwater; as I replied…..”that’s what I want.” We stood at the counter memorized by his deliberate actions and detailed steps in creating what looked like his one-of-a-kind masterpiece. He told us his interesting story on how he came to own the shop. The coffee was different, yet delicious in an unexpected way.
We experienced other encounters with friendly strangers over the four days that made us take notice; which is just what the doctor ordered. From the couple we met at Bier Zot, then again later that evening at Wickman House, to the service providers at the spa, and the woman who owned Kindgoods, a fair trade/handmade store; they made a difference in our weekend adventure. Meeting Ryan, along with the others and experiencing connections with one another is what life is all about.
Everyone wants to feel a connection to others. We need human interaction, the warmth and the soul of a good heart. Sharing special moments and the weekend with my oldest and dearest friend meant everything. Are you cultivating your friendships and connecting with their souls? It does a body good.
