Best Family Vacation

Growing up, my family took many vacations; both by air and land, plus a time or two by sea (well, actually by lake). They ranged from simple trips to more extravagant adventures. As children, my siblings and I were blessed to see parts of the USA and Canada. We saw historic sites and places made of children’s dreams such as Disneyland, Disney World and parts of the wild, wild west. It was the best of both worlds. We stayed in borrowed cabins as well as chain and luxury hotels.

Although, my parents also traveled extensively through Africa and Europe, our family vacations were strictly contained in North America. I have many fond memories of those trips, which included some not-so-good ones. Like the car accident in Colorado (thankfully there were no injuries, except perhaps a bruised ego when my Mom’s glamorous wig flew off during impact), and another incident that occurred in Canada that landed my Dad at the police station along with a moving violation.

My Mom needed him to take over as driver and instead of taking the extra time of pulling over, they switched places mid-drive, and unfortunately an unmarked trooper saw it play out. He asked my Dad if he often switched drivers in that manner (with a big smirk on his face). Need-less-to-say, the mid-air switch-a-roo delayed our trip and we had to head into town to settle the ticket.

Out of all the family trips, my favorite by far was our last trip together in August of 2016. Along with my Mom and Dad, all four siblings were able to make the trek out to California for my niece’s wedding.

We spent two days in San Fransisco, before leisurely making our way up the coast to northern California, through wine country, the redwoods, and eventually arriving in Trinidad. We visited picturesque towns and beautiful vineyards. We stayed in airbnbs and spent time together eating at fabulous restaurants, touring the countryside, shopping in quaint towns, laughing our asses off, and making memories. Each day was a new adventure and my heart was completely full. I would go out on a limb and say my siblings and parents felt the exact same way. It was a trip of a lifetime and one I won’t forget.

There wasn’t any drama, just pure joy and the knowing it would probably be our last vacation together as the original family. They were bittersweet blessings. I think about those memories from time to time and they make me smile. It was by far, hands down, the best family vacation I ever took. What was yours?
