Twice Surprised

There's a certain magic in the way life unfolds its surprises, weaving together the most memorable stories of our lives. This Thanksgiving brought with it a tale that I will cherish. It was a day marked not just by gratitude but by a delightful surprise that would once again reshape our family landscape.

Like two years ago, I received a tidbit of news that left me spellbound. Once again, my son and daughter-in-law, already parents to my sweet granddaughter, threw me off the trail. Like a magician with his tricks, he had me looking one way while the truth was happening elsewhere.

A few days prior to Thanksgiving, I had been talking with my son about my nephew’s upcoming wedding in spring of next year. Originally, he let me know his family probably wouldn’t be able to make it to the celebration since they might be due with their second child around the same time. However, recently let me know we could go together. With the news, I let my sister know they would be coming. Queue the balloons and confetti. I assumed they’d be waiting a bit longer for baby number two.

Little did I know, behind his agreement was a surprise he and his wife were preparing. The first time they announced they were expecting, I was caught off guard. This time, it seemed history delighted in repeating itself.

As we gathered for our Thanksgiving celebration, I was fully immersed in the warmth of family, the laughter of loved ones, and the delicious aromas that filled the air. I heard my son tell his 18 month old daughter to bring something to me.

In her tiny hands, she held what I thought was a little Thanksgiving token. But as she handed it to me, my eyes fell upon an ultrasound picture, a window to a new life, a new chapter in our family's story. I was totally caught off guard. Once again, my son had managed to completely surprise me. His knack for such loving conspiracies left me both amused and deeply touched.

There, in that moment, surrounded by family, I was reminded of life's beautiful unpredictability. The news of a second grandchild on the way filled my heart with a joy so profound that words could hardly do it justice. Our family was growing, and with it, our capacity for love and joy.

As we gave thanks that day, our hearts were brimming with gratitude, and a new reason to celebrate. Our family was blessed once more, and the story of being twice surprised would be another one for the books, each retelling filled with the same wonder, happiness, and a little bit of trickery.
