Through Their Eyes
Even though the holidays can be a difficult experience for some, it can also be a wonderful and joyous time of the year. Children come to mind during the season that fill many with the wonder, and the magic of what might be underneath the Christmas tree or simply the feeling in the air. Looking back when I was a child, I can remember how excited my brothers, sister and I felt in the waiting, in the preparation, and in the anticipation of the season.
I had this same feeling recently during a yoga class. I arrived like any other day, put down my mat and waited for class to begin. As we were greeted, our instructor gave us a few guidelines we would use for the final and ending pose called śavāsana (complete stillness in mind and body). She continued to mention, once the class music transitioned to her favorite holiday song (Bing Crosby’s, Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas) we were to tightly close our eyes until she instructed us to open them. You can imagine the delight and smiles of all the participants. I was giddy, frankly, everyone was giddy.
However, we would have to wait an hour to learn our surprise. Class continued as normal but I would think about her announcement, with child-like curiosity, and couldn’t help but smile. It was the anticipation and wonder around what was about to happen. As we finally settled in for our last pose, Bing Crosby came over the speakers and all eyes were shut tight. I would bet every woman in that room had a smile on their face anticipating what was about to happen. We could hear the instructor moving to and fro, making some racket along the way. At one point she stated she needed an elf as she scurried by….haha. By the time the song was over, she mentioned for us to stay put, she needed to play Bing’s song a second time to complete her task.
You could feel the excitement building in the air, as we each lay upon our mats, eyes tightly shut. The song ended for the second time and she revealed we could open our eyes. In front of each of us was a darling Christmas tree LED ultrasonic aroma diffuser, along with a couple bottles of our favorite essential oils, and a beautiful handwritten card. It was over-the-top generous of her sweet and loving heart.
Having the child-like experience while seeing through their eyes, gave each one of us the wonderful feeling of the holiday. We were able to feel their sense of curiosity and belief in the magic leading up to Christmas morning. When we stopped to see through their eyes, we were reminded of the goodwill that the season is all about. May this holiday season fill you with more joy, peace and love, while seeing it through the eyes of a child.
