The Blue Lagoon
Here in the midwest we’ve been experiencing a cold spell, accompanied by a few snowstorms that have dumped several inches of the white stuff. This week, the temperatures have been so severe, I believe it was reported the coldest it’s been in 23 years; -53 below zero with windchill. Breathing in the air will simply take your breath away. This week, while stuck inside the house, I started day dreaming about my recent visit to the Blue Lagoon while in Iceland.
It was one of the highlights of my trip; one I had only dared to dream about in earlier years. While in Iceland, the Blue Lagoon was on everyone’s “must do” list. Originally, we thought about booking the visit midweek, but decided it made more sense the day before our departure, due to the proximity of the airport. That, my friends, was the most brilliant move of the trip.
Throughout the week, we hiked, climbed up a volcano, trekked through lava fields, climbed along side and behind waterfalls, managed up rock formations along the ocean, and around a giant crater, all in cold and windy temperatures. Our bodies could use a little pampering and by the week’s end we were ready for another one-of-a-kind experience at the Blue Lagoon.
The chilly air temperature (37 degrees F) was much different than the lagoon itself (98 to 102 degrees F), as it gets its heat source from a geothermal plant next door. It’s said to have healing properties and will melt away pain and stiffness, which worked wonders on our tired bodies. The lagoon water was a beautiful medium milky-blue that was spread out over 7,000 square meters. After two hours of being in the heated lagoon we were completely revived and relaxed.
Even though I’m still in the midst of a record breaking cold spell, in my mind I can go back and relive the experiences at the Blue Lagoon again and again. Self-care is something we can do for ourselves any where and any time; nourishing our bodies, not only with food, but with love, compassion, and joy. How do you care for your body and soul? Do you regularly feed it with love and compassion?
