Sunday Night Suppers

I’ve been thinking a lot about traditions lately; creating new ones and remembering the old. It could be because the more time that passes, the more I reflect on my life and what I want my legacy to be. Legacy to some may mean only physical items passed down such as money or land, but I believe there are more important components to consider.

Although tangible items are wonderful to provide to loved ones, I feel the intangible gifts such as values, memories, friendships, traditions, and love have a bigger and more profound impact. Yes, money or land can make life easier, but the beautiful intangible experiences are what our lives are built upon. Our foundation for how we live and how we treat people is our true legacy.

One of my fondest memories as a child was Sunday night suppers. In reality, there wasn’t a real meal that was prepared. We didn’t sit at the formal dining room table with cloth napkins, fine china and silverware. My sister, two brothers, and I sat the kitchen table, wiggly, excited, and I’m certain very loud, waiting for our weekly tradition of old fashioned popcorn made on the stove with oil, kernels, and a covered pan. My Mom would shake the pan vigorously while the kernels popped and hit against the lid in rapid succession. To finish, she poured melted butter over the big bowl of goodness and tradition.

In addition to the buttery and delicious kernels, my Dad was on old fashioned chocolate malt duty. Hand scooping vanilla ice cream, adding the chocolate syrup and spooning in the malted milk powder from a jar, then blending the cold and chocolaty treat to perfection. Pouring them into malt glasses with either blue and white or red and white bendy straws.

We would gobble up our supper and then the family would gather together in the sunporch/TV room to watch the Wonderful World of Disney and Wild Kingdom programs. This was family to me. I loved Sunday nights.

Although, this may not seem like part of a legacy to some, the memories are a precious gift to me. Ice cold chocolate malts and hot buttered popcorn will always be special to my heart. Family love, togetherness, and connections are what made those times memorable. The feelings that were created from Sunday night suppers, and watching Disney and Wild Kingdom as a family are the kind of memories and legacy I want to pass down. What are yours?
