Not Just Another Saturday Night
When my daughter was in college, my son and I decided to make time, usually once a week, cooking and sharing a meal. However, now with my son being a home owner and preparing to marry, his visits are fewer than I would like. I know his schedule is busy, so I am happy whenever we have the opportunity to hang out.
Last weekend his fiancee was out of town with my daughter, other bridesmaids and friends for her bachelorette celebration. I thought it would be the perfect time for my son and I to go through family pictures that were needed for their wedding reception slide show. After making our plans, we decided to prepare a meal together before we went through the pictures.
Once he arrived, as usual, he had been working during the day and by the time he walked in was starving and ready to help with meal prep. He took a quick shower and was eager to grill, while I was busy cooking and prepping in the kitchen. I love that he jumps in and lends a hand with meal prep; together we make a good team.
It was a beautiful night and decided to dine on the patio, enjoying the food, evening and the delicious meal we prepared together, along with a cocktail that we raised our glasses in a toast….CHEERS. Conversation was easy and fun and I’m thankful for our close relationship. However, once the mosquitos arrived, it was time to head indoors and go through pictures, remembering the past.
I had prepared a selection ahead of time for him to review. It was funny how fast he made his piles; yes, no and maybe. Some of my yes’s were his definite no’s…haha. He ridiculed me for putting him in some outfits when he was a baby. I begged to differ……I thought they were darling. Darling wasn’t want he was going for…ha. It was fun uncovering photo treasures; trying to determine who some people were.
After reviewing and determining the pictures he would take, we just hung out on the couch, talking about his upcoming honeymoon and an upcoming adventure of my own. We took turns showing each other some of the excursions and points of interest we’d both be taking. All in all, the evening was not just another Saturday night, but a wonderful evening making small, yet meaningful memories. It’s not about how grand the plans are, it’s the feeling within your heart that matters. Often, simple is best, wouldn’t you agree?
