Aloha

A few weeks ago, I attended the first of two bridal showers for my future daughter-in-law, Crystal. She had mentioned my son, Andrew, would be going as well, to help her Mother and Father set-up, and would be staying for the celebration. I was a bit surprised he would be hanging around for the entire shower, but I was happy to spend some time together.

As I entered the lake house I was blown away by the amount of work and the creativity that went in to making the decor an “Aloha” theme; going to Hawaii on the honeymoon made it more special for the occasion. Crystal’s Mom had been hiding all her beautiful handmade decorations and special touches from her to surprise them.

I hardly knew anyone at the shower, but once they found out I was the mother of the groom, they were happy to meet me. Many of them mentioned how much they loved my son, and my heart beamed. One of Crystal’s relatives had been up late the night before and early that morning tending to the roasted pig. Her grandfather offered a heartfelt prayer, then we shared a fantastic meal that was prepared with love.

Once the meal was over, it was announced the game portion would begin and Andrew, Crystal, along with the moms would be participating……WHAT? The game would go five rounds and there would be two teams. Team Crystal and Team Andrew. There were five rounds to the game which included pulling wedding couple themed words out of a bowl for each round, all timed.

Round one: Word clues – as many as needed to describe each word pulled from the bowl…..as fast as humanly possible.

Round two: Pictionary – drawing the same words from round one…..as fast as humanly possible. My kayak didn’t resemble one in the least.

Round three: One word – describe the same words from earlier rounds by only using one word…..as fast as humanly possible.

Round four: Charades – act out the same words from the earlier rounds…..as fast as humanly possible. Road Kill and Whale were hilarious.

Round five: Sound effects – make sounds from the same words from rounds one to four…..as fast as humanly possible. SERIOUSLY? Welding, fishing, canoe, kayak, pajama pants, campfire, s’mores, Parsley, Banjo and snowmobiling to name a few.

Team Andrew won….even though my son and daughter thought I couldn’t pull it off…..ummm….BOOM! I did, and told them I still had game….haha. After the five rounds it was time to open presents and I have to say Andrew was all in. I think he enjoyed it as much as Crystal.

What a beautiful shower Crystal’s family put together to honor and celebrate our children. There was a lot of laughter that afternoon and I was a proud mama. I may be bias, but I think he’s pretty special. I think his bride-to-be is pretty special too. They make a great couple that complement and balance each other out. As parents we need to treasure those moments. I’m feeling blessed they found each other. Aloha, to the soon-to-be bride and groom.
