All Hands on Deck

Within a short amount of time my Mom will be hosting my sister and her family for a long weekend and anticipation of the visit, we needed to get some things done around the farm. We set aside a day to gather together and tackle the work.

My assigned job was to run the lawn mower while both my son and brother worked tirelessly getting my Dad’s prized hay wagon ready for hauling passengers. Growing up on the farm, mowing was one of my weekly chores and I’d always enjoyed jumping on the mower and letting er rip….haha. As I made my way across the yard to the barn, my brother Jeff told me I’d have help for the day, as my brother Greg and sister-in-law Pat would be tag-teaming with me…..WOO-HOO! As the three of us headed out on the tractors, each handling different sections, Jeff would be busy weed-whacking, blowing and edging the driveway, in between working on the wagon……..I’m pretty sure he drew the short straw…Ha!

With many hands, we finished the work in record time. Well, we thought the work was done, until Jeff announced we missed a couple areas. We all thought the others had completed them and off we went to finish the job. My other sister-in-law, Dee, was on lunch duty as we were called to break bread together. It still feels strange without my Dad’s presence in body, but I’m pretty sure he was with us in spirit. He loved work days like this and pitching in together for a common goal. I have no doubt he was smiling down on his family.

After lunch was finished, most headed back to the barn where my son, Andrew and brother Jeff were still getting the hay wagon ready. What a beautiful sight to see. They put hours of effort, not to mention the dollars spent, especially Jeff, into making it special. My Dad’s prized hay wagon will be put to good use, in his honor. I’ll save the wagon story for another time, but as for this week, it was all hands on deck, and everyone worked with a happy heart.
